Touch Me Tonight

Lyrics and Music ©2025 by Bill Roper

One of the ways that I end up writing songs is when a phrase shows up and promptly expands itself into a chorus. That's all well and good, but then I need to figure out what the rest of the song is about.

In this case, it turned out to be another traveling home song.

G
I’ve been floating in the space lanes
      Em7
On an orbit much too long.
Cadd9
Keeping the ship lined up in three planes
    D
And writing you this song.
     G
It’s been two months since to my sorrow
    Em7
The vidstream up and died,
    Cadd9
But I’ll be home before tomorrow
         D
And I’ll meet you down on planetside.

(Chorus)
G C/G G
Touch me tonight.
        C/G D
There’s nothing very subtle about the words I’m singing.
G C/G G
Touch me tonight.
     C/G D
Feel like I’m in a church and all the bells are ringing.
    C/G D
I’m caught up in the counterglow
  G Em7
Reflected by your light.
  A A7
I just want to know when I wake up tomorrow
     D
That everything will be all right.

I’m heating up an MRE
Because it’s suppertime.
I’m kicking round a memory
And I’m looking for words that rhyme.
Telemetry is going through
So they know I’m in control.
Tonight I’m gonna be with you
Once I fly through this keyhole.

(Bridge)
    C/G
I’m drumming on the console.
    G
I’m tapping out the beat.
     C/G
It’s time for one more barrel roll
  D
Before this trip’s complete.

One more hour till landing.
One more verse to write.
Too many words demanding
To hit the page tonight.
I want to say the right thing
‘Cause I’ve said too much that’s wrong.
That’s why your spaceman’s writing
Another traveling song.

(Chorus twice)

C/G D G
Touch me tonight.
